Unit 3: Mind-Body Connection

For this Unit, I am to rate my level of wellness (1-10) physically, spiritually, and psychologically.  I have rated my physical and spiritual wellness as an 8 and my psychological wellness as a 7.  I have been doing exercises over the last 2 1/12 months; where I have been able to feel better about myself and have also improved my body physically.  What I mean physically is that my cardio has improved tremendously; I have been able to go from running 1 1/2 minutes non stop to running 23 minutes non stop.  That is a huge improvement for myself!  I also think that I have a very good spiritual wellness, but I would also like to improve that as well.  My psychological wellness does need to be improved because I do have some stress in my life; like I am sure every does.
I have set a goal for each wellness for the next month.  For my physical wellness, I am currently running 3 times per week and I want to be able to run the entire 4.4 miles without stopping.  This 4.4 miles is how long it takes to get from my house to the lake and back!  This is my goal for the next month. My spiritual wellness goal is to pray at least three times per week with my son before he goes to bed.  My psychological wellness goal is to have at least 15 minutes three times per week where I can have relaxation time.  I think this will really help to relieve stress.    The activities I'm already implenting are running, going to the gym 2 x per week, and eating healthier.
The Crime of Century relaxation audio technique was a little frustrating for me.  It seems to be a little helpful, but all of the colors was getting to be frustrating.  At first, the audio seemed to be very calming, but then when it kept asking me to think of different colors, it was getting frustrating.  Then when it went from aqua blue to indigo blue, I could think of indigo blue for some reason.  I think this relaxation technique is just not the right technique for me; it was just a little too much thinking behind the technique.  For me, I need something that is just a little more relaxing.
I hope this helps everyone and I look forward to reading everyone's comments!

  1. I love that you set your physical goal to run your 4.4 miles without stopping. That is awesome! I think that is an attainable goal and you seem to know what you need to do. Running is great for your body and your mind. I love running and I think it really helps me deal with stresses in my life also. I think that if you keep on running you will easily reach your goal and then you should set a goal of 5-5.5 miles without stopping. I am currently hoping to be able to run a half-marathon (without stopping) by November, so good luck with your endeavors!
You are also right with regards to needing to take some time out of the day just for yourself, whether it's 5 minutes or 15 minutes. We all should be able to take time to relax or just be alone to think, even if we can't take 30 minutes. Any amount of quiet time will help us to de-stress a little ; it will help us to relax. I think a big part of being able to cope with stress in a healthy manner is being able to know when we need our down-time. And, I think, most everyone deals with some sort of stress everyday, which means everyday we have to take time for ourselves so we can positively handle our stresses. Good job on your post for this unit!

  2. Hi Sara!

I think that cardio is one of the best ways of de-stressing I can think of. My husband runs about 5 miles everyday and says it "blows out the carbon", and I think that's really true. I'm proud of you for keeping up the great goals! I understand what you said about all of the rainbow colors he made us concentrate on for the relaxation. No matter, I just relax and almost fall asleep anyway. The music they use in the background is very relaxing.

    Cheers!

  3. Hi Sara,
Running even a mile seems impossible for me. I had a knee replaced almost 2 years ago. I am working on just being able to walk a couple of miles. I agree that taking the time just for yourself is important. I certainly need to make that a priority. I find it easy to make time for each of my kids separately but when it comes to time for just me I just don't make it a priority. Exercise and time for me is what I need to work on. Love your blog!!

  4. Sarah, I find that it works for me too when I go early in the morning and have a good workout it just makes me feel so much better and I have a better day at work it gets me going. I don't start off my morning good if I don't go and workout before work. Love your blog.....

  5. Hello Sara. It is great that you implement exercises and strategies on becoming stronger in these areas. I think that the hardest part for me would be the psycological area, due to the stess of work and school mainly. You have a great agenda to strenghten you in these areas, and the running part of your physical area is very good. It does feel good to be able to have more stamina as time passes by incorporating these types of physical actvities you do. Keep up the good work, and an excellent blog.
